Three companies made heliborne assaults into the Saigon suburb of Hoc Mon, which the Viet Cong had overrun the night before. The American force immediately began clearing operations. In the early stages of the fighting around Cu Chi, the 3rd Bn, 22nd Inf and the 4th Bn (Mech), 23rd Inf bore the brunt of the action.
Operation Quyet Thang (transl. "Resolved to win"), was a United States Army and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) security operation to reestablish South Vietnamese control over the areas immediately around Saigon in the aftermath of the Tet Offensive. The operation started on 11 March 1968 and ended on 7 April 1968.

On March 2, 1968, after an ambush at Hoc Mon Bridge, we had 50 KIAs come into Cu Chi. Other large batches came on chinooks. None of these would surpass the results of the ten-day battle of Hamburger Hill in May 1969: 72 KIA.
