Nauvoo Temple. Latter-day Saints settled in Commerce (later Nauvoo), Illinois, in 1839 after being driven from Missouri. Their eventual expulsion prevented them from completing three planned temples in Missouri but did not discourage them from attempting to build a temple-centered city. 1 Land for a new temple in Nauvoo was secured in 1840.
Temple History. The Nauvoo Illinois Temple is a reconstruction of the original Nauvoo Temple built in the 1840s and destroyed by fire in 1848. The Nauvoo Illinois Temple is the second of the currently operating temples built in Illinois, following the Chicago Illinois Temple (1985).
History. [edit] Located in the town of Nauvoo, the temple's construction was announced on April 4, 1999, by church president Gordon B. Hinckley. [ 5 ] Groundbreaking was conducted on October 24, 1999 and the cornerstones were laid November 5, 2000, with Hinckley presiding over both ceremonies [ 3 ].
