History. Hertford was originally incorporated in 1758 as the county seat for Perquimans County, first inhabited by the Yeopim Indians. County records show that the Yeopim chief Kalcacenin sold land to George Durant at the river mouth in March 1662, adjacent to land he had already sold to Samuel Pricklove. [6]
Birthplace of the inventor of the Gatling Gun, the coastal county of Hertford holds an important position in North Carolina’s history. The Meherrin called modern-day Hertford home before the arrival of early European settlers from the Virginia colony.
Despite isolation and poverty, the little settlement was a leader in the early history of North Carolina. Until 1716, it served as the state's first capital, with the first public buildings: prison, storehouse and pillory.
History. [edit] Hertford County is home of the Meherrin Indian Tribe, descendants of indigenous people who had inhabited the region for many centuries. After decades of encroachment by English colonists, the Tribe moved south from Virginia, where they settled in 1706 on a reservation abandoned by the Chowanoke.
Today, Hertford, nestled on a point surrounded on two sides by water with inviting tree-lined streets and numerous historic homes, is one of the Albemarle region's best-preserved and picturesque towns.

The district developed between about 1759 and 1948, and includes notable examples of Federal, Greek Revival, and Gothic Revival style architecture. Located in the district are the separately listed Perquimans County Courthouse and Church of the Holy Trinity.
