The paper deals with the text-critical challenge and the variationist analysis in application to the historical linguistics of Biblical Hebrew, coming out in recent research, particularly in Historical Linguistics and Biblical Hebrew by Robert Rezetko and Ian Young (2014).
Procedurally the paper will (1) survey the origin and development of the Semitic languages and literatures; (2) locate Hebrew within the larger family of the Semitic languages; and (3) engage the issue of the Hebrew language and the biblical text vis-à-vis their literary and larger cultural contexts.
Inspired by cultural phenomena and by various styles of calligraphy, such as those coming from the sur-rounding Islamic and Christian cultures, the evo-lution of medieval Hebrew script was intimately connected with Jewish cultural and spiritual life.
