The formal banking history of Nepal began after the establishment of the first commercial bank, Nepal Bank Limited (NBL), in 1937 under the Nepal Bank Act 1937. This bank was established on a public-private partnership model with 52 per cent government and 48 per cent public ownership.
For more than two decades, no more banks have been established in the country. After declaring a free economy and privatization policy, the government of Nepal encouraged the foreign banks for joint ventures in Nepal. Today, the banking sector is more liberalized modernized, and systematically managed.

31 maj 2022 · Nepal Bank was established on November 15, 1937 (Bikram Sambat 1994 Kartik 30) under Nepal Bank Act, 1994. Nepal Bank Act, 1994 was the first Nepalese law related to banking. And Nepal Bank Limited was the first commercial bank established in Nepal.
Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2012 (1955) was the basis of establishing the first Central Bank in the history of modern Nepal in 2013 (1956). The new Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2058 (2002) replaced the erstwhile Act of 2012; and further ensured the operational autonomy and independence of the Rastra Bank.
History. On November 15, 1937 (Kartik 30, 1994), the then King Tribhuvan inaugurated Nepal Bank Limited. This marked the beginning of an era of formal banking in Nepal. Until then all monetary transactions were carried out by private dealers and trading center.
