See a timeline of major historical events affecting rural Ireland between 1850 and 1950. 1850 - 1869. In the immediate aftermath of the Great Famine (1845-1850) families and communities were decimated and dispersed by death and emigration. In 1841 the population was almost 8.2 million. By 1871 it was 5.4 million.
