The Land where Leavenworth and Fort Leavenworth are located today was originally inhabited by the Kansa, Osage, and Delaware Indians, and today many of our streets are named after these and other local Indian tribes. In 1858, the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth settled here.
As the main repository of the Leavenworth County legacy of history, the Society has continued its mission of discovering, preserving and sharing that history. The Carroll House serves not only as a house museum of Leavenworth artifacts, but also as an archive and research center of that history.
Inside is a diverse, yet cohesive, array of exhibits, displays, collections, and collectibles—more than one thousand!—that tell a balanced story of Leavenworth, the first city incorporated in the then-new State of Kansas in 1854.
The Leavenworth County Historical Society Museum is located in Leavenworth, Kansas and is dedicated to preserving the history and culture of Leavenworth County. The museum is housed in a restored 1903 building that was once a Carnegie Library.
The South Esplanade Historic District is an 1857 addition to the City of Leavenworth. On the east side of the street, travelers are treated to an unobstructed view of the first truly eastward bend in the Missouri River and the valley extending to the bluffs approximately four miles away.
