Thrombocytosis, also known as thrombocythemia, is a serious abnormality affecting the ability of your dog’s blood to clot correctly. If your dog has thrombocytosis it means he has too many platelets circulating in his bloodstream.
• Firstly, examine the smear under a low power lens (× 10) to check for any platelet clumps, which are often found in the feathered edge. • Using the high power oil immersion lens (× 100), examine the morphology of the platelets and count the number in 10 high power fields.
Clinical signs include petechiae of the gingivae or skin and ecchymosis, melena, or epistaxis. Platelet counts are usually < 30,000/μL and often < 10,000/μL at the time of diagnosis. If bleeding occurs at a platelet count >30,000, an additional coagulation abnormality may be present.
Platelet disorders can result from having too few or too many platelets or from impaired platelet function. In general, when platelet counts fall very low there is an increased risk of bleeding. Decreases in platelets may be caused by anti-platelet antibodies, drugs, toxins, or disorders of the bone marrow.
