Herpes zoster (HZ) infection is caused by reactivation of varicella zoster virus (VZV), which has established latency in the sensory ganglia after primary infection with VZV [1]. HZ causes a painful unilateral blistering dermatomal rash. It is thought to cause nerve damage that can lead to postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). PHN is a dermatomal nerve.

Risk factors and complications associated with herpes zoster depend on the age, immune status, and the time of initializing treatment. Routine vaccination for individuals over 60 years has shown considerable effect in terms of reducing the incidence of herpes zoster and post-herpetic neuralgia.

As HZ epidemiology and burden are evolving, this systematic literature review aimed to update the current understanding of HZ burden and associated costs for selected Asia-Pacific locales.
