This document specifies the basic image formats and digital sampling systems for High Definition Television (HDTV) production in the European 50 Hz environment. It is intended to meet the demands of EBU Members for interoperability and implementation stability in their HDTV production systems.
Image formats for HDTV. HDTV. John Ive. Sony Europe – PSE. For several years, European broadcasters have been making programmes in high definition – often based upon co-production deals with the USA and Japan – using the 1920 x 1080 Common Image Format.

High-definition television (HDTV) describes a television or video system which provides a substantially higher image resolution than the previous generation of technologies.
TV standards through 1080p. The red-tinted image shows 576i or 576p resolution. The blue-tinted image shows 720p resolution, an HDTV level of resolution. The full-color image shows 1080 resolution.
