Tertiary (higher) education in the Netherlands is made up of hoger beroepsonderwijs – HBO (higher vocational education) and wetenschappelijk onderwijs – WO (scientific/academic education). The certificates they award to graduates are equivalent to those awarded by publicly-funded institutions.
