The basic grant is a gift if you are in MBO level 1 (‘entrée-opleiding’) or 2. For MBO level 3 or 4, HBO, and university programmes, the basic grant is a ‘performance grant’. This means the basic grant becomes a gift if you obtain your diploma within 10 years.

Student finance for students in MBO, HBO and university is funded by the Dutch government. Some components of student finance are grants, others are loans that you have to repay.
The Dutch education system is complicated enough as it is. Already international students do not understand whether to go to HBO or uni. But also, internationally seen, a WO bachelor's/master's degree comes with certain expectations, namely, that you had some form of classical research courses.
You will receive a supplementary grant for MBO for as long as you get a basic grant. You will get the supplementary grant for HBO or university for the official duration of your degree programme (usually 4 years).
