To unlock the mine make sure you've started Keira's Black Heart Event on the 255th floor of the 3rd mine and reached the bottom of the 3rd mine before you get married. Afterwards, just activate the mine discovery event with Carter one last time.
There are creatures throughout the mines that will try to harm you. The bugs will fly along set paths and can easily be avoided, but the other beasts will hone in on your location and knock you around.
The first mine is unlocked by coming into the excavation site in the afternoon/evening. An event will occur where Carter wants you to use your hammer to break down a wall (which consequently opens up the mine).
