19 wrz 2017 · First and most important, the exact model of the machine must be known to determine if the upgrade kit available is compatible to the lathe. Anytime I purchased from littlemachineshop.com I could see on the website parts description where a compatibility list for that part was published.
17 sie 2006 · Other thoughts on checking out the YM splitter at Home depot ($1300+) against the HF machine. YM splitter had a bunch of the tweaks mentioned above already done - looked like the same design updated. Engine was a 5hp honda compared to my HF 9 hp subaru. Much more steel in the HF splitter - the design philosophy seemed to be spare no I beam.
To find these tools I looked in forums where metal workers, woodworkers, farmers, gardeners and mechanics discussed the quality of items that they’ve bought from Harbor Freight. I read well over 1000 individual forum posts to harvest out the good enough, the bad and the abysmal tools and materials from Harbor Freight.
The Vevor lathe is about three times the weight of the sherline, and that means it's FAR more rigid. Rigidity is one of the main limiting factors of a small machine tool, so the heavier and more rigid you can get, the better. More rigid means less vibration or chatter, tighter tolerances, heavier cuts with less deflection, and faster working.
All the small metal lathes (except Sherline) from HF, Grizzly, LMS, etc, are made by Sieg. They vary slightly in features, but the fundamental design is the same. The general consensus that I've seen is that they're a surprisingly good value. A $400 lathe is certainly no replacement for a $10000 lathe, but for home/hobby use they're great.
The Grizzly mini lathe comes with more accessories than most of the other mini lathes, including a faceplate, steady rest, and a 2 Morse taper dead center. Harbor Freight Tools sells two versions of the mini lathe. The Central Machinery model 93212 mini lathe is a 7x10 mini lathe.
