Arnold Henry Guyot ( GEE-oh) (September 28, 1807 – February 8, 1884) was a Swiss-American geologist and geographer. The guyot was named after him.
24 wrz 2024 · Arnold Henry Guyot was a Swiss-born American geologist, geographer, and educator whose extensive meteorological observations led to the founding of the U.S. Weather Bureau. The guyot, a flat-topped volcanic peak rising from the ocean floor, is named after him. He studied at the College of Neuchâtel.
Guyot was born on September 28, 1807, at Boudevilliers, near Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He was educated at Chaux-de-Fonds, then at the college of Neuchâtel. In 1825, he went to Germany and resided in Karlsruhe where he met Louis Agassiz, the beginning of a lifelong friendship. From Karlsruhe he moved to Stuttgart, where he studied at the gymnasium.
History. Guyots were first recognized in 1945 by Harry Hammond Hess, who collected data using echo-sounding equipment on a ship he commanded during World War II. [4] . His data showed that some undersea mountains had flat tops. Hess called these undersea mountains "guyots", after the 19th-century geographer Arnold Henry Guyot. [5] .
