There are 4 "games" in the original Guild Wars series. You need at least one of the first 3 to play at all, and you need the 4th to get any GW2 rewards - but any GW1 account can be linked to GW2. Prophecies = GOTY Prophecies + Factions + Nightfall = Trilogy. Eye of the North = GW2 bonuses.
Consider the free game a fairly generous trial, is definitely not a free-to-play game where you can get the full experience by grinding instead of paying. It's buy-to-play, one payment to unlock a given piece of content, no subs. Full price for all content, about $100.
