31 paź 2018 · Grand Canyon National Park contains 129 vegetation communities, and the composition and distribution of plant species is influenced by climate, geomorphology and geology. The monument also contains outstanding biological resources preserved by its remote location and limited travel corridors.
Grand Canyon National Park contains 129 vegetation communities, and the composition and distribution of plant species is influenced by climate, geomorphology and geology. Along the Colorado River and its perennial tributaries, a riparian community exists.
Their defining characteristic is a constant presence of water, so they are composed of lush vegetation, including cottonwood trees. While the smallest Grand Canyon ecosystem, the greatest biodiversity is supported here in both aquatic and terrestrial organisms.
Riparian vegetation can impact native and non-native fish populations by providing food and cover and influencing water temperature by shading. Also, more than 50 percent of 166 breeding bird species in the lowlands of the southwest are completely dependent on these habitats.
Plant life in particular changes dramatically from top to bottom as you descend from alpine forest to desert scrub to riparian forest. There are more than 1,500 known species of vascular plants, 167 species of fungi, 64 species of moss and 195 species of lichen in the Park.
