2 lis 2021 · For Durkheim (1961 [1925]), morality had three elements: a) the spirit of personal discipline and the ability to master one’s own egotism, b) attachment to social groups and the notion that society is the ultimate object of moral goals, and c) a free acceptance of such moral rules (Lukes 1985).
This paper examines the principles that guide our moral compasses and the social actions resulting from those moral coordinates. The result is a testable framework of moral concepts tied to social actions built from leading theories of moral psychology.
From a sociological perspective, any explanation of the moral rests primarily on the fact that we are ordinarily habituated into norms, expectations, and evalu-ative terms of what is generally considered to be good, decent, considered, worthwhile, and acceptable within a social context (Addams 1902; Cooley 1902; Hayes 1918; Dewey 1922; Mead 1934).
