12 sie 2021 · Phelsuma laticauda. Best known for the starring role as the “Geico” gecko, the Gold Dust Day gecko (P. laticauda) is the first urban wildlife spotlight. Native to Madagascar and the Comoros, this gecko is now found in Hawai’i and other Pacific Islands.
The Gold Dust Day Gecko is known for its vibrant green color and gold speckles, while the Mourning Gecko is a small, brown gecko that reproduces through parthenogenesis, meaning females can produce offspring without males.
The four original species established in the islands are the: Indo-Pacific Gecko, Mourning Gecko, Stump-Toed Gecko and Tree Gecko. There are now currently about eight gecko species here, including the Gold-Dust Day Gecko and Tokay Gecko.
