The open hair clipper has cutting blades that are adjustable with a control mechanism, while the closed hair clipper utilizes a fixed blade system.
Using a closed clipper will leave just stubble. Using the clipper open will leave the hair at 1/16th of an inch long. A "1" guard with most companies will leave hair 1/8th of an inch long while closed.
