The action is based on the historical events of the Roman civil war of 48–47 BC. Julius Caesar has defeated his rival Pompey and pursued him to Alexandria, capital of Egypt.
Giulio Cesare arrives in Egypt, where he meets warring royal siblings Cleopatra and Tolomeo, each determined to win the throne by any means possible. Appalled by Tolomeo’s cruelty and violence, and seduced by the beautiful Cleopatra, Cesare throws his support behind her.
Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Julius Caesar in Egypt, HWV 17), commonly known simply as Giulio Cesare, is an Italian opera in three acts written for the Royal Academy of Music by George Frideric Handel in 1724.
Synopsis. Handel’s Giulio Cesare tells the story of how Julius Caesar (Cesare) tries to bring peace to the turbulent relationship between the Egyptian and Roman empires, but is prevented from doing so by Ptolemy (Tolomeo), the current Egyptian King.
