The GED ® exam consists of four tests: Reasoning (Reading/Writing) – 150 minutes. Math – 115 minutes. Science – 90 minutes. Social Studies -70 minutes. With a City Colleges of Chicago scholarship there is no cost (FREE) ($30 without scholarship). The HiSET® exam consists of five tests: Language Arts – Reading – 65 minutes.

You can find this free-of-charge exam at Illinois Regional Offices of Education and local adult education programs. You’re not required to officially prepare for the test by taking classes, but it is highly recommended. Lessons help you learn the material that will be on the exams.

So, in Illinois, there are two options to earn your HSE (high school equivalency) exam: the GED and HiSET, but not all Illinois GED testing locations offer both options.
