Colion Noir and Canadian Prepper can be kinda cringey to listen to but both have decent reviews on civilian available gas masks. Ive got an m40, which is the currently used mask by the army. Def leaves things to be desired, but pretty good bang for your buck.

For this, 3M reusable respirators are the best value, and will cover a majority of the most likely emergency scenarios - wildfire smoke (most people die due to smoke inhalation, not fires), toxic rubble dust (see: 9/11 responders cancer rates).

Gas masks are designed to filter out and bind chemicals for common gases that are used in military engagements. CO CO2 and other smoke hydrocarbons are going to be too small or too reacted to either get caught or bind to the filter.
