Nazi Germany made extensive use of various types of gas chambers for mass-murder during the Holocaust. Beginning in 1939, gas chambers were used as part of Aktion T4 , an " involuntary euthanasia " program under which the Nazis murdered people with physical and intellectual disabilities, whom the Nazis considered "unworthy of life" .
After they were killed, Sonderkommando prisoners dragged the corpses out of the gas chambers. They cut off the women’s hair and removed all metal dental work and jewelry. Then they burned the corpses in pits, on pyres, or in the crematorium furnaces.
Construction of Auschwitz II began the following month, and from 1942 until late 1944 freight trains delivered Jews from all over German-occupied Europe to its gas chambers. Of the 1.3 million people sent to Auschwitz, 1.1 million were murdered.
After the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, Nazi SS Einsatzgruppen, or mobile killing squads, began the systematic execution of Jews in conquered territories of the U.S.S.R. These mass-killings were carried out by firing squad, but it was soon determined that this technique was inefficient.
Gas chambers. After the successful test of using gas to kill prisoners in the basement of block 11, the first gas chamber was set up in Auschwitz I. It went into operation in the autumn of 1941 in a converted facility that had previously served as a morgue associated with the first camp crematorium.
