This handout explains follow-up care after surgery to remove a ganglion cyst from either the dorsal (see Figure 1) or palmar (volar-see Figure 2) wrist. The ganglion is formed by the synovial or joint cell lining in the wrist.
Your Recovery. Ganglion cyst removal is surgery to remove a ganglion that has caused pain or numbness or made it hard to do your activities. A ganglion is a small sac, or cyst, filled with a clear fluid that is thick like jelly. The cyst may look like a bump on your hand or wrist.
Surgical Treatment. Your doctor may recommend surgery if your symptoms are not relieved by nonsurgical methods, or if the ganglion returns after aspiration. The procedure to remove a ganglion cyst is called an excision. Surgery involves removing the cyst as well as addressing the stalk from which the cyst arises.
