There's no 'best position' although there's definitely some no-go areas. Best position varies depending on what the enemy does, what particular tank you have, what tanks they have and whether you are top or bottom tier. There isn't even any general rule for tank types.
Getting a friendly tank on one of these paths will expose all enemies above them to fire. This map is a chess game, usually won through attrition and the targeting skills of individual tankers. There is almost nowhere to "hide" on this map: when you fire, expect counterfire!
