This New Orleans institution has won the Best Gumbo category in the Best of New Orleans poll every year since 1999. Instead of a house gumbo, this restaurant offers seafood, okra and chicken-andouille versions of this indigenous soup as well as file gumbo with chicken.
The Gumbo Shop is located in the French Quarter of New Orleans. We were touring and asked for a lunch spot recommendation and this was highly raved about. The restaurant has a simple layout and was very busy and loud with high ceilings. We perused over the menu and settled on the gumbo and jambalaya. The service was good, no complaints.

There is absolutely better food in New Orleans, but it's hard to beat the atmosphere when it hits right.
I'll be traveling to New Orleans in a few months and am trying to pick out some great spots for classic and modern New Orleans fine dining. For "classic" I'll be going to Mr. B's, which I've heard great things about. For "modern," I'm torn between Commander's Palace and Clancy's. Any opinions here? Is it worth trying to do both?
