The franc (/ f r æ ŋ k /; French: franc français, [fʁɑ̃ fʁɑ̃sɛ]; sign: F or Fr), [n 2] also commonly distinguished as the French franc (FF), was a currency of France. Between 1360 and 1641, it was the name of coins worth 1 livre tournois and it remained in common parlance as a term for this amount of money.
The symbol of the currency was simply 'F'. The franc officially ceased to exist between 1641 and 1795, following its replacement by Louis XIII with the ecu and the Louis d'Or, but the name franc remained in common usage.
The actual currency in France is the Euro with the symbol € and has been since January 1st, 1999. One Euro is made up of 100 cents, or ‘centimes’ in French. (Of note, France is not a cashless society so Euro notes and 50 cents €1 & €2 coins are always very useful.)
