It is an epic poem, written in Ancient Greek but assumed to be derived from earlier oral sources, and tells much of the story of the legendary Trojan War between mainland Greece and the city of Troy in Asia Minor.

'Sacking' a captured city, in English, comes from the French 'mettre à sac', evoking the image of a soldier roaming the city filling a sack with valuable items that he seizes as loot. That is brutal enough by our standards, but it puts the emphasis on plunder as the main thing going on.
