Kutuzov, Russian movie (1943) with English subtitles, describes also the Fire of Moscow (1812). The fire was adapted into 1965–67 Soviet film War and Peace; the film crew planned out the scenes for 10 months and shot the fires with six ground cameras while also filming from helicopters.
The capture of the city was a hollow victory for the French, as the Russians—most likely on orders of governor Fyodor Rostopchin —set much of the city on fire in a scorched earth tactic (though the cause of the fire is disputed). For four days until 18 September, the city burned.
