The key to identifying fig varieties correctly is using Condit's system of leaf and fruit classifications. Condit lists many characteristics in his own identifications, but I have room for only the major features of the fruit and leaves.
Often leaf shape is used to classify and identify fig varieties, but fig leaves are extremely variable, even from the same tree. Generally they can be used most effectively to rule out varieties, rather than to make a definitive identification.
Fig Tree Varieties. There are numerous varieties of fig trees, each with unique features and characteristics. Some popular varieties include: Chicago Hardy: Known for its cold hardiness and sweet, dark figs. Celeste: Produces small, sweet figs and is resistant to fig rust.
