Massachusetts is one of the few states that require private employers to give employees holiday leave. The laws, known as Massachusetts’ Blue Laws, differentiate between retailers, non-retailers, and manufacturers.
The following is a list of legal holidays and the dates on which they will be observed for calendar years 2024 and 2025. As the holiday calendar is used as a planning tool by employees and agencies, two years are included to facilitate short and long-term scheduling of vacations, office coverage, and major agency events.
The Massachusetts Blue Laws control which businesses may legally operate on Sundays and some legal holidays. Various retail and non-retail businesses are allowed to operate on those days, but some retailers must abide by voluntariness of employment provisions.
Overtime must be paid at a rate of at least one and one-half times the employee’s regular rate of pay for each hour worked in a workweek in excess of the maximum allowable in a given type of employment.
