As a medical symptom, photophobia is not a morbid fear or phobia, but an experience of discomfort or pain to the eyes due to light exposure or by presence of actual physical sensitivity of the eyes, [2] though the term is sometimes additionally applied to abnormal or irrational fear of light, such as heliophobia. [3]
Photophobia is a poorly understood light-induced phenomenon that emerges in a variety of neurological and ophthalmological conditions. Over the years, multiple mechanisms have been proposed to explain its causes; however, scarce research and lack of systematic assessment of photophobia in patients has made the search for answers quite challenging.
In this review, we define photophobia broadly as a sensory state in which light causes discomfort in the eye or head; it may also cause an avoidance reaction without overt pain. We use photo-oculodynia to describe light-induced eye pain from a normally non-painful source (e.g. ambient lighting).
20 wrz 2017 · In this paper, we review the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of photophobia in neurological disorders, including primary headache, blepharospasm, progressive supranuclear palsy, and traumatic brain injury, discuss the definition, etiology and pathogenesis, and summarize practical methods of diagnosis and treatment.
There are at least three distinct definitions of photophobia in the literature: (1) abnormal sensitivity to light [1]; (2) ocular discomfort, also termed photo-oculodynia, [6]; (3) exacerbation of headache by light [7 – 9]; and (4) our recent proposal to define photophobia more broadly: general aversion to light [10].
30 lip 2018 · Photophobia, a sensory disturbance provoked by light, is a common symptom seen in neurological and ophthalmological conditions. Photophobia is of great diagnostic significance in the clinical evaluation of patients with headaches, but its definition is somewhat challenging.
Advances in our ability to trace multiple brain pathways through which light information is processed have paved the way to a better understanding of the neurobiology of photophobia and the complexity of the symptoms triggered by light.
