1. The Great Wave off Kanagawa – Katsushika Hokusai. Katsushika Hokusai painted this Japanese masterpiece during a time when the country had long been isolated from the rest of the world. The artist painted a series of works which focused on Mount Fuji, as well as the sea.

The Great Wave was influenced by Dutch depictions of the sea, a topic that was not popular in Japan at the time.
