TL;DR - There is only 1 legitimate source for the Steam Desktop Authenticator. Any other source will contain Steam-stealer malware. Nearly 3 years ago, Valve started requiring the Steam Mobile App's 2-factor authentication for trading and other features like competitive play.
If your desktop is infected with a virus, it will be able to hijack the authenticator app and completely subvert the protection. THIS APPLICATION DOES NOT PROTECT YOUR ACCOUNT; IT ONLY ALLOWS YOU TO USE STEAM FEATURES THAT REQUIRE THE AUTHENTICATOR WITHOUT HAVING A PHONE.
18 maj 2023 · A suspected Russia-based cybercriminal decided to clone the website of a legitimate open-source desktop app (see here) called Steam Desktop Authenticator (SDA) which is simply a convenient desktop version of the mobile authenticator app. However, for that convenience, there is a price - impersonation scams and account hijacking.
Recently I got scammed by fake site and downloaded "Fake Steam Desktop Authenticator". If you need to know, real SDA is app which is substitute for Steam Mobile App (for accepting trades and logins etc).
