Each sample of proficient student writing is accompanied by a completed rubric and a written commentary that provides a rationale for and specific examples used to determine proficiency. The commentaries include the instructional context, student text, analysis, and instructional implications.
The sample: • Establishes a clear position—Be careful when you let your dog off leash! • Provides several persuasive reasons supported by skillful use of anecdotes. • Addresses other aspects of the issue. • Provides a strong lead to engage reader interest. • Maintains a consistent focus on topic.
This student showed that she knows how to counterclaim her own opinion in order to establish and effective and responsible argument. Also, the transitions, use and elaboration of evidence, were exemplary for on-demand writing.
10 sty 2022 · Teaching opinion writing is so much easier when you have great books to go with it! Today, I’m sharing some of my favorite books to teach opinion writing. Before you embark on any type of writing, it is so important that your students have an example (a mentor!) or model of that type of writing.
Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information. a. Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which ideas are logically grouped to support the writer’s purpose. b. Provide logically ordered reasons that are supported by facts and details.
