Near Oak Road, Evendale, Late 1830s–1842 In the late 1830s, Van Zandt, a former slave owner in Kentucky, moved to Evendale and became an abolitionist farmer after he had a dream that God admonished him for owning slaves. In 1842, he was caught transporting runaway slaves; his case eventually made its way to the Supreme Court.
