The objective of the guidelines panel was to provide evidence-based guidance on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and male accessory-gland infections, while addressing crucial public health aspects related to infection control and antimicrobial stewardship.
The treatment of UTIs in elderly and frail individuals is further hindered as the use of many antimicrobial groups is discouraged, due to their debilitating adverse events and the pathophysiological features (such as decreased kidney and liver function) of these patients .
Because of the potential for serious complications and mortality, elderly patients with urinary tract infection, should receive immediate empirical treatment based on anamnesis, clinical evaluation and urinalysis and should be re-examined using results from cultures and antibiograms upon follow-up.
27 lut 2019 · In the context of an increase of Escherichia coli bloodstream infections in England, early initiation of recommended first line antibiotics for UTI in the older population is advocated.
1 lis 2019 · Extended Spectrum βeta-Lactamase (ESBL) producing Enterobacteriacae causing UTIs, which are usually multidrug resistant organisms, pose a great therapeutic treatment challenge. Rediscovery of forgotten antibiotics such as pivmecillinam, fosfomycin, and nitrofurantoin may be helpful in this situation until the discovery of new agents.
22 maj 2020 · 22 May 2020. PDF. Split View. Cite. Permissions. Share. Abstract. ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae as uropathogens have given rise to a sizeable amount of global morbidity. Community and hospital surveillance studies continue to report increasing proportions of these organisms as causes of urinary tract infection (UTI).
5 wrz 2017 · In this study, we found that elderly patients admitted to hospital with community-onset E. coli UTI could be classified into two groups according to the presence or not of healthcare-associated criteria with varying risk of infection by ESBL-producing E. coli.
