Summary: In 4:17–24, Paul says that the lives of his readers should reflect the dramatic transformation that has taken place in them at their conversion. They should no longer live in a way that speaks of the confusion, demonic control, and despair that characterize those who are estranged from the life God provides.
Paul calls the Christians of Ephesus to take seriously the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives. We must ask Christ to apply His victory to our lives as we face the specific areas of transformation presented in the following verses of Ephesians 4 and 5, passages addressing specific behavior with regard to integrity, anger and sexual conduct.
a. With all lowliness and gentleness: A worthy walk before God will be marked by lowliness and gentleness, not a pushy desire to defend our own rights and advance our own agenda. i. Before Christianity, the word lowliness always had a bad association to it.
