The Egyptian Number System. The number system of ancient Egypt was decimal in nature but did not make use of place value. As a result of this, they didn't have a symbol for zero. There were two kind of writing used in Egypt, hieroglyphics and demotic (hieratic). In the hieroglyphic system, the symbols used were:
The Egyptian number system used symbols to represent numbers. There wasn’t a symbol for every single number. Their number system looked like this: They didn’t have a symbol for the number 9, so if they wanted to write down the number 9, they wrote the symbol for number one 9 times.
The Egyptian number system was additive. Large numbers were represented by collections of the glyphs and the value was obtained by simply adding the individual numbers together.
