31 lip 2015 · Several aspects of the BOP’s inmate management, including costs, housing, and programming, are affected by an aging inmate population that is growing more quickly than the rest of the BOP’s inmate population. First, aging inmates are more costly to incarcerate than their younger counterparts.
There are now 26,200 prisoners age 65 or older. It is increasingly costly for correctional systems to meet the needs of their elderly populations. Annual medical expenditures are three to eight times greater for older State prisoners than for other inmates.
Older adults in prison often exhibit physical and mental health problems, including dementia, and histories of trauma and chronic stress. Over 3,000 of these men and women will die each year in prison. 2
