Economic sociology applies a ‘sociological perspective to economic phenomena’ (Smelser and Swedberg, 2005: 3), arguing that economic life is embedded in the larger social structure. Economic sociology is a broad based endeavor to contextualize economic actions, processes and structures in the wider societal context.
As we know, economic sociology is afected by developments in economics. It is not that economic sociology is economics; it is a diferent discipline, with its own concepts, methods, and traditions. However, at least in the last few decades, the main movements in economic sociology have responded to developments in economics.
This course will provide an overview of these broad concerns and approaches in economic sociology, and review the sociological explanations of economic activities of production, consumption and distribution in a wide range of settings.
