Building Department. The mission of the East Chicago Building Department is to provide a resident-friendly and efficient entity that will enforce the minimum standards for the protection of life, health, environment, public safety and general welfare.
East Chicago is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 26,370 at the 2020 census. Centered around heavy industry, the city is home to the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal, an artificial freshwater harbor characterized by industrial and manufacturing activity.
East Chicago is a lakefront community located along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan within 20 minutes of downtown Chicago. With more than $120 million of investment in commercial and housing development throughout the city and lakefront, East Chicago provides greater opportunities for residents, visitors, and private developers.
East Chicago is one of only two cities statewide that continues to operate and manage a local health department for its residents. The East Chicago Health Department is the only Health Department in northwest and central Indiana that operates an Animal Control Division at the local level.
