Dolby Cinema projects better images with 500 times higher contrast ratio and four times more resolution than IMAX. On the other hand, IMAX uses 40% larger screens and a 26% taller aspect ratio as compared to Dolby Cinema.
Honest opinion is that dolby is much better than your standard liemax. Image quality is superior (500 times higher contrast ratio, 4× more resolution) as well as the sound (dolby atmos is the gold standard). Still its nice to see films In imax aspect ratio, but unless there's at least 1 hour of imax footage I'm going dolby every time. Love both.
I prefer my local theater's Prime over my nearest Dolby, which is a bit run down (no rumble, I see imperfections in the screen, I don't like the seating layout relative to my Prime theater). So the blanket answer is that, yes, it makes a difference, but there are exceptions.
I live in Manhattan and have been watching movies on the two best screens in the US (Dolby Cinema at AMC 34th Street and IMAX at Lincoln Square) and unless the movie is something like Dune or Oppenheimer 70mm IMAX, I’ve learned Dolby Cinema is the far better choice.
Dolby Cinema is miles better than IMAX in every possible way you can think of. Audio is everything for me in using any Cinema and Dolby have been excellent at it.
Most IMAX theaters aren't real IMAX screens. Unless you're certain it's a real IMAX theater, go with Dolby. It depends on which film you’re seeing, how it was shot and prepared for presentation in those formats, and which theatre you go to (some are incomparable to others despite similar branding).
If you're only interested in Crosswoods go with the 3D DLX screen. Otherwise, check out Imax at the Lennox or the Dolby Cinema or Prime auditorium at Easton. I wouldn't want to sit through a long Imax show at Easton, the chairs are not great in that auditorium.
