If you are interested in applying for free or low-cost child care, first find out if you are eligible. There are several types of child care programs available in the city, so consider your family’s needs and choose carefully. The department has provided a step-by-step checklist for choosing a child care provider.
Family Day Care. Family day care allows for up to six children, ages 6 weeks through 12 years, plus two additional school-age children. There must always be one caregiver for every two children who are younger than 2 years old. You can learn how to get or renew registration to operate a standard family day care program. To obtain an application for a child care program license or registration, you will take the Child Day Care Orientation. This orientation will help you decide if operating a child care program in New York State is right for you.
Day Care Centers: Provide care for seven or more children at a facility other than a personal residence. Small Day Care Centers : Provide care for up to six children at a facility that is not a personal residence.
A Group Child Care program provides child care to 3 or more children under the age of 6 years of age for 5 or more hours per week, for more than 30 days in a 12-month period, primarily operating in a non-residential space.
Use the Step by Step tool. Group Family Day Care offers child care in a family home on a regular basis for more than three hours per day per child. In this type of care there can be seven to 12 children, ages six weeks to 12 years, plus four more school-age children.
