7 wrz 2013 · I make mine by covering circles of camping mat foam which is rigid enough to keep in shape when pushed into the port hole in but floppy enough to squeeze in snugly. I leave one third of the outside strip open to be able to remove the foam and wash the covers, sealing the opening with velcro.

It took a little trimming with scissors, but finally got the dimensions right and popped it into the porthole frame. This tutorial will provide the basics, optional material and what ultimately worked for me. What I envisioned was a 3 dimensional porthole with material that mimicked glass and rivets as well. The hardest part was finding what looked like glass, but wasn't glass, that I could cut. Clear acrylic sheet!
Thanks to Devin Holland, we are looking at DIY round porthole designs for the cabin tops which would be much easier to build and less expensive casting our own. Custom built portals also have the advantage that the flanges can be made to accommodate various wall thicknesses.
