Are you into electromechanical DIY? A direct from China laser will be great, but will require a lot of tuning to make it work properly. With work, they’ll be faster and more versatile than a glowforge.
You're not gonna find a 100W kit laser. If you really want to go DIY you're still gonna have to source it yourself but in terms of documentation and having a support group the Further Fabrication Laser is probably your best bet. Also Cloudray has a reseller in Australia.

Clear acrylic, glass, polycarbonate, etc is opaque to the 10600nm light from a CO2 laser. A specific tint isn't needed. Smoked (transparent grey) acrylic is somewhat popular because it reduces glare and looks nice. But as far as catching stray reflection goes, clear acrylic will work just as well.
