This chapter defines and ex amines seven primary functions of dance in musicals: as an exploration of character in psychological terms, as a narrative tool, as an unspoken aspect of libretto, as a transition al device, to develop character, as metaphor, and as danced abstraction within the narra tive.
Jazz dance, dancing to jazz music, has its own structure and its particular framework. Key attributes are the principle of improvisation, expression of folk culture, dancing to jazz music, themes of life and time, the essential response to rhythm and the use of isolation body technique.
My central task in this chapter is to articulate a methodology for analyzing dance in musical theater performance. This article examines the impact of the presence of the human body on how we perceive dance art. It first establishes two basic layers of expressiveness in dance: A natural expressiveness provided by the presence of the real body, and an artistic expressiveness articulated by the choreographed body.
