By knowing the rate equation for a reaction, we can determine how the reaction rate will change as the concentrations of reactants change, and we can design experiments to optimize the reaction conditions.
Factors which affect the rate of reaction: • temperature of the reactants. • pressure (only applies to gases) • concentration of reactants (applies to solutions) • surface area (applies to solid reactants) • use of a catalyst.

To use a mechanism to determine the rate law, identify the slow step of the reaction, which is either labeled “slow” or has the highest activation energy. This slow step is known as the rate-determining step, since its completion limits the entire reaction’s rate of completion.
Five factors typically affecting the rates of chemical reactions will be explored in this section: the chemical nature of the reacting substances, the state of subdivision (one large lump versus many small particles) of the reactants, the temperature of the reactants, the concentration of the reactants, and the presence of a catalyst.
