17 maj 2024 · The phrase je m’appelle (my name is) is comprised of je (I) and the verb appeler (to call) in the reflexive (to myself) form. The following is s’appeler (to call oneself) in conjugated in the present tense.
So "Je m'appelle" actually means "I am called" instead of "I call myself". You can say "Mon nom est X", but that would be if you want to insist on your name being X and not something else. For example if someone keep using the wrong name or mispronouncing it.
